Weeknotes: Iced Honey — Week 11, 2026

  • This week I spoke about AI a lot in four entirely separated contexts, and got to run an architecture session I’ve waited a few months for. Pretty good.
  • Our faustian pact is back. And because of it, I had to say a few words during an all-hands, so I said “a few words“.
  • Round tables make for interesting dinner parties.
  • At a nomikai, I spoke in extremely basic Japanese about doing the Yamathon, and some other stuff which I don’t remember, before going to another bar where some animated Australians aggressively and ardently advanced their all-absorbing affable aura... until we left because it’s a school night maaaaan.
  • In a moment of weakness, we went to a restaurant best described as “basically Nandos” and I had their spiciest grilled chicken. In words I never thought I’d use, I actually really miss Nandos?
  • Friday the 13th was Freaky Friday, which like in the movie of the same name, involved some switching of places. Unlike the movie, it also involved unlimited garlic shrimp, two separate taco restaurants and a walk of shame home. 10/10.
  • Unfortunately Friday the 13th did bring some suboptimal luck this time.
  • Both the Art Fair Tokyo and Tokyo Vintage Fashion Week were running this weekend, and I hit up both. I spoke to some people and took lots of photos, but ultimately didn’t buy anything: For whatever reason I felt zero stylistic pull.
  • I hurt my finger, and my doctor gave me complicated instructions on how to fix it. And then during the week, last week’s movement caught up with me and I hurt my back really badly standing up on the train. Aaaa.
  • Went to Costco in Kawasaki, and stepping through the doors I felt like Lucy stepping through the wardrobe into Narnia for the first time. Transported to a place that is neither Japan nor America but something in-between. We gamed the free samples, and walked out with the essentials: A few months’ worth of coffee and a tub of Everything Bagel Seasoning.
  • In another moment of weakness I had their pizza, and it was the most thoroughly mid thing I have ever eaten. But a long-held craving has now been sated.
  • There's a listicle I sorely want to write, but for many reasons I just can't ever do it, but I want to add “Writing my blog in Japanese” to that hypothetical list. What do we think chat, should I attempt to weeknote in Japanese?
  • Pride is lost.
