Weeknotes: Rusting — Week 16, 2024

  • Week 1 of learning about modern Rust. It’s a nice language but I haven’t touched it in so long and have forgotten almost everything other than how to interact with wrapped data. Reading The Rust Book.
  • Originally my plan was to fly home on Sunday, but at the last minute I pivoted to visit my dad (and a maths institute) in Leipzig. We discovered a nice ramen place, and I discovered a cool candlelit bar.
  • Flew home on Wednesday (but managed to sneak a final sauna in). Thanks to the magic of travel-hacking, I flew business for £25, which is cheaper than the budget route.
  • My first Berlin Brandenburg experience went like this: “Gosh, this airport is pretty nice. It’s clean and spacious?” ... “Hold on my gate is where?” ... “You want me to re-enter the country?” ... Reader, I went through three different passport control areas, and picked up three passport stamps.
  • The Rust is going so well that I built a cute little CLI in Python. :)
  • On Thursday, met up with some FT professional people, and I ate a lot of meat. (It was Fazenda, and honestly I thought the Birmingham one was a bit better. The pineapple and chicken hearts were the star of the show.)
  • On Friday, L & T and I went to the Pizza Express in Paddington, where two men brazenly attempted to steal my bag from right next to me. Really wound me and the manager up, but they’d fled before we could do anything. Keep your guard up!
  • Had a really magical weekend walking Central London with M, including watching the first few Marathon finishers and accidentally stumbling upon the 420 event.
  • PaStation is well worth the hype.
