As part of a recent language programme, I was asked to give a short speech in Japanese. I'm finding it quite challenging to learn, so this was a golden opportunity to talk about something else it is teaching me.
Setup:
皆さん、最近、面白いことがわかりました。
私の三つの趣味は、同じ趣味です。
Folks uh, recently I realised something interesting: My three hobbies are the same hobby.
Triple:
その三つは、エレクトロニックな音楽と、走ることと、日本語の勉強です。
The three are: electronic music, running, and studying Japanese.
Beat 1:
エレクトロニックな音楽が好きです。
その音楽は、めちゃ長いです。多分、八分ぐらいです？
でも、大きいところはありません。
ゆっくり変わります。
最後は、ぜんぜん違う音楽になります。
I like electronic music.
Tracks are very long. Probably around 8 minutes?
But there's no big moment.
It changes slowly.
And at the end, it becomes completely different music.
Beat 2:
走ることも、同じです。
「今日、速くなりました」と思いません。
でも、一年後、違う人になります。
Running is the same too.
I don't think, “Today I got faster”.
But after a year, I become a different person.
Beat 3:
日本語も、同じです。
Studying Japanese is the same too.
Payoff:
一番面白いことは、何ですか。
「つまらない」か「私は下手です」と思う時です。
その時が、一番な大切です。
でも、やめません。続けます。
そして、何かが変わります！
The most interesting thing?
It's when you think, "This is boring" or "I'm bad at this".
That's the most important time.
You don't quit. You keep going.
And then, something changes!
