Weeknotes: The New Song — Week 30, 2026

  • Reader, where did I leave you? Ah. On the train to watch the World Cup. Monday was a holiday, so we pulled an all-nighter and enjoyed watching Spain win, followed by a quest to find a full English breakfast. 大成功だった! During the day I managed to crank out the chores including finishing a clothes shop.

  • Summer is well and truly here, and for the next six weeks (at least) I am going to need to sequester a supply of spare shirts in my office desk.

  • A decent chunk of my time at work this week went into getting last week’s plan moving. This involved a lot of talking but things are going swimmingly and I’m chuffed.

  • My class-load also dialled up considerably from this week: Reader, I have homework assignments, and honestly I could not be happier.

  • Did you know that you can comfortably fit every single weeknote and journal you’ve ever written into the context window of a big model like Fable, and ask it to spot story arcs, trends, blindspots, etc.? Over the week I did this and compared results with Z. A few highlights:

    • My net-sentiment is positive trending upwards, with very rare low (and even rarer negative) sentiment. I was pleasantly surprised at this result.
    • High-notes usually come from doing the hard/scary thing. Meanwhile low-notes usually come from avoiding, putting off or missing the hard/scary thing (or it being random/unavoidable).
    • High-notes (and my mood index) also correlate with how much I write about the future, and while there’s no negative sentiment correlation with writing about the past, I keep picking rivalries/feuds with past-Alex.
    • Food/drink directly correlates with relationships: I write about (or include photos of) food/drink when they are a proxy for meaningful time with meaningful people, and this pattern holds true across everywhere I have lived or stayed.
    • So, in short: JFDI, think about the future more and continue sharing meals & drinks with good people. Maybe I’ll share more lessons in the future.
  • Speaking of writing about meaningful time with people, unfortunately our plans to watch Fujirock this year fell through because one day sold-out. So, instead we gathered to watch the live-streams on Friday and again on Sunday:

    • The XX was great: I’d seen Jamie XX before and hadn’t realised there was more, or that my Putney flat was seconds away from the school where they met!
    • Kneecap gave me goosebumps and was surreal? I’ve always wanted to see them live, and while I wasn’t there in person it was everything I hoped it would be, mosh-pits, flags and all. When The Recap finally came on I was so ready.
    • Massive Attack was, well, pure art. It pushed some pretty strong emotions. Fewer words better than more for this one. Please watch the VOD.
    • Unexpected highlight was Tāl Fry which I am not sure what to make of.
  • Saturday night we watched the Sumidagawa fireworks festival from a balcony. Felt pretty smug having a private front-row seat for one of the hottest 花火 of the year. Some very good conversations, and of course, we had Fujirock and F1 on in the background.

  • And also made very some good progress with a side-project.

  • Of sacrifice at world's end.
