Solid week, even with the whole having to take a train through Euston thing.
You know when you ご馳走さまでした at the sushi bar and you don’t get jouzu’d? Yeah it was rough.
My purpose in Birmingham this week was twofold: Celebrate my sister’s birthday, and, do as much reconnecting & catching-up as possible. And that’s two boxes ticked off the todo list - who needs GTD?
Sad to report that PureCraft’s selection of Belgian beers seems to have shrunk! :(
Thrilled to have seen as many friends and former colleagues as I did, including during a surprise flyby visit to Bluetel’s new office.
Reader, you’ll also be pleased that I staved off the gossip.
Over the week I’ve fiddled with a data-science problem (saving deets for a write-up). It’s involved much tuning of hyperparameters and seeing increasingly marginal returns - the levels of abstraction in off-the-shelf machine-learning models make it really difficult to influence the underpinning maths. Unless you have enough computational power to do significant fine-tuning. (My MacBook doesn’t cut it).
At the weekend I watched two of my favourite people get married in a beautiful ceremony which began in a town-hall and ended drowning in Limoncello in an East London Italian restaurant. My personal highlight was getting a temporary tattoo reading “eat spaghetti to forgetti your regretti”.
